Altamont was formed in 1994 by Dale Crover, longtime drummer for the Melvins. Dale started the band with his friends from Acid King, Dan Southwick on bass, and Joey Osbourne on drums. After they did "the Monkee's Uncle" in 2005 they added engineer/producer Toshi Kasai (Big Business, Deaf Nephews) on guitar and keyboards.

Altamont has released three albums on the now defunct Man’s Ruin label: 'Wanted Dead or Alive' (a split record with Acid King), 'Civil War Fantasy' and 'Our Darling'. In 2005 The Monkee’s Uncle was released on the label AntAcidAudio, an offshoot of Ipecac Recordings, home of the Melvins. Altamont is also featured on ‘Right In The Nuts’, an Aerosmith tribute album for which they covered the song "Make It".

In late 2013 Altamont released the "Mrs. Creech" 7 inch on Valley King Records. The new 7 inch also has a Blue Oyster Cult cover on it, the song "Transmaniacon MC," which is a fictional Sci-fi version of what happened at Altamont.
